: Hi there.
: I am currently evaluating StarTeam and am quite impressed. But when practicing the MS Project integration it appeared that a task exported from MS Project to StarTeam can not be edited like native StarTeam Tasks.
: It is, for example, impossible to create subtasks which is a major drawback as we intended to use MS Project as the rough outlining tool and refine all tasks in StarTeam whilst working on the project.

: Is there any possibility (maybe using the SDK?) to import data from MS Project but still creating subtasks and refining the tasks structure under StarTeam??

Hi Peter,

You state that "we intended to use MS Project as the rough outlining tool and refine all tasks in StarTeam". If you choose to use the MS Project integration in StarTeam, all creation of Tasks as well as Sub-tasks must be done from within MS Project. This is not a limitation in the StarTeam MS Project integration but by actual design. The reason is that synchronization problems might otherwise occur in MS Project.

Another restriction pertains to the data that is replicated from the MS Project task in the StarTeam task. Data that is stored in MS Project may not be edited from StarTeam. For example, the Milestone and Priority check boxes are read-only for replicated tasks but editable for tasks created in StarTeam. This restriction avoids problems that occur when attempting to synchronize mismatched data values and also permits the project planner using MS Project to more easily make changes to the plan.

The typical user rarely does more than add work to a task, fill custom fields, add revision comments, and indicate that the task needs attention to a team leader or other team members.

Best Regards,

Tommie
